*40+ On a cloudy and no so windy Sunday morning the 2016
winter series started with a very nice filed on the 40+ race.
Many attempts from some riders to breakaway were controlled by
the bunch. When the bell rang all of the sprinters were alert,
but in a surprise finale with the return of Alez Zambrana to
racing, when he threw his bike to win the race over the line,
his bike got raised from the ground for about one inch, to
complete the race with an average of 25.18 MPH. Second place was
for Steve Mlujeak followed by Jose A Rodriguez.
* 50+ The turn came to the 50+ field, where the bunch kept it
all the riders together. The interesting part of the race it
happened in the last lap, all bets from the spectators at the
line were in favor of Charlie Rosenthal but amazingly right
before the section called “the S turns” Javier Ortiz jump from
the bunch and opened a gap of about 7 seconds to win the race
for ½ a second, excellent timing to complete the event with an
average speed of 25.21 MPH. Second place was for Rosenthal and
the last step of podium was taken by Leonel Rodriguez.
*Pro 1,2,3 The name of the game: high speed. That is what we
saw the entire race, the level showed by the riders was high. A
warm South Florida weather brought us riders from North
Carolina, Georgia, Canada and Trinidad & Tobago. The original
time for this race was extended to 1 hour due to the number of
participants, when you see almost the entire race on a single
file, it tell you the intensity of the event. In a very
technical course with six turns they average 27.43 MPH! Finally
after many attempts two riders broke away within about the last
ten minutes of the race. Two laps to go and Ruben Companioni
jumps his companion Akai Campbell to win the race in a solo by 9
seconds. The Trinidadian had enough energy to take second place
in a solo as well. About 14 second later we had the field sprint
taken by the Canadian Arroussen Laflamme.
*4&5 We closed the season opener with one of the more
enthusiastic races the 4 & 5 field. From the very first lap we
saw riders looking to create a breakaway, but nothing sticks.
Finally at mid race two riders broke away and they were chased
by a group of three, which at the same time were pursued by
another two and the field about 15 seconds behind. The last two
went back to the pack and we had five in the final escape group.
One lap to go and one of the rider’s chain fell off, from the
back he gets pushed by Perez Avila in a good gesture of fair
game, putting him back in contention. The final sprint came in a
race that averaged 25.7 MPH taken by Leonardo Perez Avila
followed by Jose Gonzalez and Javier Bomnin.
